Memorial to Mail

I love mail. I love getting it but above all I love sending mail. Mail is magical. That a letter can travel around the world in a week and a bit, or across a country in a few days is phenomenal. When I was growing up, mail was extra special. We had a red milk churn for a mailbox. It was so fabulous. I remember dad welding it together, painting it, making the sign with our property name on it & fixing it to the tree. It became a direction poster. "We're the red milk churn mail box, if you hit the Big Egg you've gone too far." Mail only came 4 days a week. We had a larikan for a postie who'd write messages on our mail "Looks like a good one Hoges" & do burn outs at the top of our driveway. The mailbox was half a km from the house so in the summer my sister & I would grab our bikes & cycle up to check if it'd come. If there was a package we got to make a special trip to the village post office to collect it off Jackie & maybe even score a Peppermint Pattie if we were good.

When I went to college, email was still in it's infancy. Our little mail pigeonholes by the dining room were a source of constant delight for me. Mailing mixed tapes to my beloved friend Cath in Toowoomba & receiving them in return was consistently the highlight of my month. Sending letters to friends about boys, challenges of living in Sydney & how sophisticated I imagined myself to be were my lifeblood. Letters to my grandmas helped me stave off homesickness.

Now as an adult, going out to the mailbox to check it with Lachie is a daily ritual. The absolute joy on his face when a letter arrives for him is priceless. The excitement he gets from "helping" me write, address, stamp & put letters in the mailbox is infectious. He's experiencing literacy & learning about distance. The picture letters my dad sends him are the closest thing to perfection I will experience. His re-reading of the card to me, without compare.

I hope when you get a birthday card from me you know I was thinking about you on your special day. But not just on your day, before it too. You are important to me. I think about you often.

I remember my mum's address book with her friend's children's birthdays all listed. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person I know with a "birthday book." I understand that honoring your friend's children's birthdays seems to be a dying tradition (it's okay, I know as you're reading this you have no idea when my kids birthdays are, don't worry, you're not alone) but just thinking about Lachie's face when he gets mail keeps me sending them to hope that same joy is felt somewhere else.

I love text messaging, email & Facebook but I always just imagined there was something special about a card. I always think of my grandma (who I assume I inherited my love of cards from) who unfailingly goes to a store, chooses a card especially for me/Lach/Dunc, writes on it, addresses it, lines up at the post office, buys a stamp & takes it to a postbox with enough time to get to us before our birthday. She thought about us for weeks to get that card here. Facebook didn't tell her it was my/their birthday, she knew. It makes it so much more special.

However, as time goes by I have begun to realize that the love & thought I had been trying to infuse in my cards wasn't being transferred. I'll always remember the time I sent a friend an anniversary card. It was their first anniversary in their first home, it seemed a special one to celebrate. When I asked if she'd received it she said "Oh yes, I haven't seen it though yet. My husband just put it in a pile with all the other anniversary cards we got" At that moment I realized that what I thought was a special message & a reflection of how much I cared for them was not that at all.

People just don't share my love of cards & mail. I'm sure when my cards arrive they're opened, read & probably promptly put in the recycling. Hopefully they at least bring a little smile to someone's face during those short minutes. That makes it worthwhile right?

Over time my love of cards has started to hurt me. I have issues, clearly, but if I'm being honest, it has started to hurt that no one remembers my boys’ birthdays. That I send Christmas cards to the same people every year & never get one in return. It hurts when people inform me "oh I'm just too busy for cards" as if to say I don’t work as hard as them or I mustn't be as important if I have time to send them.

I don't wish to sound ungrateful, I have a couple of beautiful friends who never cease to remember us & send gorgeous words & thoughts, they never cease to bring a warn fuzzy glow to my heart. They know who they are, and the effort they go to to deal with international postage makes me love and appreciate them even more than I already do.

I love, love sending cards, but I think it's time to wean myself from the addiction. Even the US Postal service has had to cut Saturday service, so it seems both it & I have received the same message. It'll take me a while, I'm not going to lie. The thought of a little person getting as much joy as Lachie & Dunc do from ripping open an envelope will probably keep me sending them to little people for some time. I'd write something like "please don't be upset if you stop getting cards from me, I still love you" but that's the whole point of this blog right? Ironically I'm sure the only person who will notice or be upset will be me :)

Holy Catch Up Batman

Wow, so I don't even know where to begin with this.  Apparently the last time I posted was 2010, definitely half a lifetime ago.  I am hoping to become a tad more useful at this blogging thing.  I am of two minds about it.  I don't really get the point of it when there is already so much of my life in the social network sphere, but at the same time there does seem to be little substance there.  What if I want to wow you all with my ramblings?  So I'll try this out instead...

As we approach the end of February I find myself with an almost one year old and a three and a half year old, owning a house and being a stay at home mum.  Its been a pretty dramatic year of change, but not one I would change for anything.  It's a pretty amazing feeling being so blessed.

I plan on trying to be more up to date with this going forward.  Although no promises, I said that in 2010 as well :)

Its March, Really?

So it seems that it has been a long time between posts for me! Amazingly I find myself in March and well and truly in the trenches. March is the longest month of the school year. Not that it technically has any more days, rather it just drags. Students are in limbo between Ski Break and Spring Break and it rains... all the time.
For me, Much of the last two months seem to have flown by in a blur. It feels like just yesterday that we were frolicing with mum and dad. We had an amazing time in Australia and are now more determined than ever to get our butts organised for a more permanent solution. Farmer Lachie was at home there as well :) I don't know that there was an animal alive that he didn't ride or "pet" in some form or another. It is also where his current dog obsession began. Although I cannot be sure that the feelings were mutual for Barney....

It was wonderful to be able to catch up with family and so many friends. We were truly blessed to have had so many friends make such an effort to come see us and meet Lachie. My biggest regret (which is the same regret that I always have) is that we weren't able to catch up with everyone that we wanted to. Hopefully our next trip home will be of a longer (perhaps even permanent!!!) length. I was especially excited to be able to catch up with Sally, Joey and Trudie while we were in Sydney. Lachie was a champ as we dragged him around the harbour and out to dinner. Sadly we were kicked out of a bar because of him. No, he was not drunk as the picture below might suggest, rather he was "under 18" and therefore not allowed in some of the bars and restaurants on Circular Quay after 6pm. First time in a long time I've been kicked out of a bar, and I can honestly say it wasn't my fault :) I'll be sure to drag this story out for Lachie's 21st though!!

February was brilliant and I am more than a little sad to see the month end. We had a birthday celebration every weekend and Ski Break was nothing short of amazing. It is so nice to have the mornings with Lachie. While I didn't think that I could do the full time stay at home mum thing, I think that I could give it a pretty darn good shot! Every morning we got up by 7am. Lachie had his breakfast and we hit the road for our 3 mile walk (via Peet's, ah how I adore you) Back home for a nap, some playtime, lunch and then off on an adventure with Jamaica to the dish or Santa Cruz to pick out wedding stuff with Brook and Joey or lunch with Nancy. As you can imagine, the last two weeks of actually having to be at work by 7:30 and being productive is less than appealing :) Curse you March!!!!

Why I Wish My Life Was an Episode of "Kath & Kim"

So I figured if I was coming back I should come back with a shabang of randomness - enter the "Kath and Kim" post stage left.

The last few weeks I have felt like my life is in a little bit of a funk. Not necessarily a bad funk, just kind of a weird head space. This afternoon I decided that Kath and Kim had the ability to try to jolt me out of my funny mood and the more I contemplated it, the more I realised that Kath and Kim hold all the answers to life's problems...

Firstly, Kim never seems to work and yet always has the "latest" clothes and a new car every season. Now I know that part of the comedy of the show is the underlying truth that her wealth is based on credit card debt, yet she never seems to have any problems making the payments regardless of how much she stacks on it. This appeals to me

Secondly, I would like to be able to use phrases like "tot" "escapegoat" and "hornbag" in everyday conversation.

Thirdly, Kim was a pretty darn fabulous looking pregnant person. Weight only went on to her tummy and then as soon as she had Epponnee-Rai all the weight miraculously disappeared. While I am at it I would like some of those electronic weightloss machines that she sticks to her tummy. And maybe some fluffy uggs... maybe...

Fourthly, I was well and truly obsessed with parrot earrings when I was in high school. I owned several pairs. Surely it is time for them to come back in style?

Fifthly, spending all day at the mall sounds faboosh (thank you to AI's friend for introducing me to this word - I plan to use it everyday!!) I like cappucinos, I like wandering aimlessly and stangely I seem to have the propensity to do not much all afternoon long.

Sixthly (I don't even know if this is a word and I need to stop I know) Epponnee-Rai only appears when it is convenient to have a baby. She is miraculously elsewhere and not requiring feeding, changing, burping, entertaining etc EVER!! Don't get me wrong, I don't wish Lachie gone. Clearly Epponnee-Rai is a highly advanced baby that has learned to do all of these things herself. Perhaps I could hire her to tutor Lachie?
Lastly, wine time is definitely a fine time.

Or maybe, realistically, the thing is I just wish I was back in Australia.....

Lachie Loves the Ladies

So this is my first attempt at "blogging" and I'm not sure how long I will last as I am definitely a facebook girl! However I have been inspired by my friend Lisa's blog which is just fabulous, so we'll give it a go!

Lachie has almost reached 3 months and as I am going back to work next week, I'll use this blog as a catch up.

I titled this one, Lachie Loves the Ladies, as he really does! One of the many benefits of being the first of my close friends to have a baby means that I am surrounded by wonderful, amazing brilliant women who come visit, entertain and "learn." This has a couple of benefits! Firstly Lachie becomes guinea pig baby, dispelling "babies hate me fears" across the Bay Area. Secondly, Lachie has become a really social baby. He laughs and coos at different people all the time, and seems to thrive on it. Generally putting on a good show for friends who don't believe my tales of woo and tantrums! Clever Lachie, wrapping those ladies around his little finger already, I predict big things for him :)

Below is a montage of ladies that Lachie has put under his spell. Big hugs to the ladies who keep me sane, who are, and are not featured in the pictures below: JK, BM, JW, CG, MM, EF, SB, RS, CQ and JM (technically not a lady, but loved all the same!)
